International 'Thank a Superintendent Day' 23 September 2020
23 sep 2020
As a healthy outdoor activity that can adhere to social distancing requirements, golf has seen a worldwide resurgence in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Today is the first international #ThankASuper Day which is acknowledging the hard work and dedication of our Golf Course Superintendents.
The COVID-19 breakout has sincerely and significantly called attention to the importance of our local Golf Courses. These green spaces have become a key facility to those who need mental space and exercise, and as a result has positioned sports turf maintenance as an important public function.
Today the Australian Sports Turf Managers Association (ASTMA) in conjunction with other global superintendent and turf management organisations, is recognising those who help keep the game going enjoyable with the first international “Thank a Superintendent Day” encouraging all those who love golf to thank their course’s turf management professionals.
Turfcare WA’s Golf Course Superintendents
Turfcare WA are very lucky to have Ryan Whitson and Tom Tristram on board as our two Golf Course Superintendents for City of Wanneroo’s Marangaroo Golf Course and Carramar Golf Course and we would like to extend our utmost appreciation and gratitude for their ongoing dedication and work over the past 6 months. Both have seen the numbers of golfers double since the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak which has placed significant turf maintenance demands to ensure optimum and consistent playability and performance.
Ryan Whitson, Marangaroo Golf Course
“I enjoy being outdoors and working with a team who pride themselves on delivering a golf course that is enjoyable to the patrons” - Ryan Whitson, Superintendent at Marangaroo Golf Course
Since joining us in 2015, Ryan Whitson has brought over 20 years’ experience of being a Superintendent to Turfcare WA. Prior to that, he has guided teams in some of South Africa’s leading Championship Golf Courses including Modderfontein Golf Club, Blue Valley Golf & Country Estate, Eye of Africa Golf Estate and Benoni Lake Golf Club.
Tom Tristram, Carramar Golf Course
“I have always enjoyed working outdoors, particularly at Carramar as the course has a unique landscape with natural bush land and kangaroos surrounding the fairways. There is also a strong sense of teamwork with the crew which makes it even more enjoyable” - Tom Tristram, Carramar Golf Course
Tom Tristram recently landed his first Superintendent position at Carramar Golf Course when joining Turfcare WA at the beginning of 2020. With over seven years’ experience as a greenkeeper and with an expertise in irrigation, turf nutrition, and weed/pest control, Tom has excelled in his career moving quickly from Greenkeeper to 2IC to Superintendent. Tom has worked on some of Perth’s finest courses including Hartfield Country Club, Mount Lawley Golf Course and Marangaroo Golf Course.
Turfcare WA have been the facility managers of Marangaroo and Carramar Golf Course on behalf of City of Wanneroo since 2017 and since have seen an increase in the turf’s playability and aesthetic which has lead to the consistent increase in new patrons and patron retention.
In addition to our Golf Course Superintendents, we would like to extend our thanks to all of Turfcare WA’s Sports Turf Managers and Apprentices. Every single one of them have dealt and reacted to the constantly changing pandemic procedures with such dedication and resilience and have continuously delivered the highest quality service to our clients and their service users.
